CAN SOMEONE TELL MTN TO STAY AWAY FROM AMBIGUITY?

By now, every Nigerian is expected to have known or heard about MTN because it’s assumed to be everywhere you go in Nigeria. Based on its credibility as the leading or one of the leading telecommunications company in Africa, it is amazing how this big brand could fail to pay attention to a message which is meant to be passed across to all its subscribers on the network. Take a look at the image below:

What did you see? Were you able to decode the contents of the message at your first glance? If you did, it is either you are not sure of what you decoded or you are the one who typed the message. Now let’s examine the contents of the message. …spend your daily target on MTN2MTN or MTN2Others Calls & get 500% bonus …

The questions that may arise from the ambiguous texts above are:

  • ·         Is MTN2Others the calls you make from your MTN line to other people on your mobile phone contact?
  • ·         Is MTN2Others the calls you make from your MTN line to other people who are not on your family and friends’ list?
  • ·         Is MTN2Others the calls you make from your MTN line to other people from another network?
  • ·         Is MTN2Others the calls you make from your MTN line to other contacts outside the country?

The list goes on…your interpretation of the word others in the text depends on what you understand to be the meaning of others. We need to understand that the purpose of every message conveyed by any brand is to ensure clarity in all forms.
I hereby suggest that MTN should change its ambiguous concept of MTN2Others to something more explicit and easy to understand. I know there are many creative short words that can be used to convey the intended message clearly, instead of the ambiguous and confusing MTN2Others idea.
I see MTN as a brand that is big enough to conform to standard, Nigerians want standard, nothing but the best.

CARELESS DISPLAY/ADVERT OF TOBACCO ON BRITISH AMERICAN TOBACCO'S HOMEPAGE

The Nigeria National Tobacco Control Bill is a comprehensive law that regulates the manufacturing, advertising, distribution and consumption of tobacco products in Nigeria. The bill was passed sometime in 2009. It is intended to prohibit all forms of tobacco advertisements (direct or indirect), sponsorship and promotions, endorsements, testimonials or sales promotions. How would you relate the stipulation of the bill above to the display of tobacco products on the company's website http://www.batnigeria.com/ ? Don't you think this is a form of advert? Can someone please tell British American Tobacco to keep to the standard given by the Nigerian law? As a company dealing with brands that pose risks to health, I believe that there are many other ways that BAT Nigeria can stylishly and creatively pass a message about their brand instead of carelessly displaying the brand on their homepage. Check  http://www.bat.com/ , did you notice any difference in the d...

WHY ARE SACHET CONSUMABLE PRODUCTS NOT PACKAGED IN TRANSPARENT MATERIALS?

A friend of mine called to report to me few days ago that he went to a shop to get some bottles of alcoholic drinks (spirit) to help his wife who just gave birth to a baby… burn some fat. It is a common local practice among nursing mothers here in Nigeria. I don’t really know how effective the result is. Anyway, that is not my bone of contention for writing this piece. After getting the drinks, my friend told me he saw some scary particles in the drink, shortly after his wife drank from one of the bottles. On discovering this, he quickly checked the other bottle which is still sealed and discovered that there were some noticeable particles in the bottle too. So, he called to ask for my advice since his wife had been stooling and vomiting for some days now. She is presently admitted at the hospital. We have decided to take this case up against the company. Any lawyer interested in helping us out to seek justice should please contact me as soon as possible. We have the ...
