MR. BIGG’S HOT MEAL ISN’T HOT AT ALL

  (IMAGE 1)                                                     (IMAGE 2)

Mr. Bigg’s is the largest retail food business in West Africa with over 131 restaurants in about 40 cities in Nigeria and Ghana. No doubt, Mr. Bigg’s is a household brand in Nigeria but it is quite amazing how this big brand could fail to deliver its message clearly and confirm its credibility in the heat of struggle with its increasing number of competitors.

A close and critical examination of the image B above shows that the message intended to be conveyed is a perfect example of obscurity, ambiguity, disorderliness and falsification in the overall meaning suggested by the image.

A hot meal is expected to be portrayed as a dish covered in flames to indicate hotness. The phrase ‘hot meals’ written on the dish of rice and fried chicken and that of beans and chicken as portrayed in image B does not conform with the message that is carried out by the image. According to Geoffrey P. Miller, the author of Pragmatics and the Maxims of Interpretations, there should be a relationship between the text and the image used in a context. So, in the context of image B above, it is obvious that the content of the message portrayed by the text is against the message portrayed by the image.

In this case, I conclude that the concept of the advert is against the maxim of manner, relation and maxim of quality.

However, I suggest that in order to create effective and relevant adverts for products, copywriters should be well trained. Contradictory and deceptive words should be avoided. Most importantly, copywriters should carry out pragmatic analysis on the basic elements of their products before they are advertised to the public.

  1. Good discovery. I think this is one of the reasons why Coca Cola as a brand has to present its bottle in every image as a cold drink. I agree with you that in advert, picture speaks louder than words. We need more of this in Nigeria.

CARELESS DISPLAY/ADVERT OF TOBACCO ON BRITISH AMERICAN TOBACCO'S HOMEPAGE

The Nigeria National Tobacco Control Bill is a comprehensive law that regulates the manufacturing, advertising, distribution and consumption of tobacco products in Nigeria. The bill was passed sometime in 2009. It is intended to prohibit all forms of tobacco advertisements (direct or indirect), sponsorship and promotions, endorsements, testimonials or sales promotions. How would you relate the stipulation of the bill above to the display of tobacco products on the company's website http://www.batnigeria.com/ ? Don't you think this is a form of advert? Can someone please tell British American Tobacco to keep to the standard given by the Nigerian law? As a company dealing with brands that pose risks to health, I believe that there are many other ways that BAT Nigeria can stylishly and creatively pass a message about their brand instead of carelessly displaying the brand on their homepage. Check  http://www.bat.com/ , did you notice any difference in the d...

WHY ARE SACHET CONSUMABLE PRODUCTS NOT PACKAGED IN TRANSPARENT MATERIALS?

A friend of mine called to report to me few days ago that he went to a shop to get some bottles of alcoholic drinks (spirit) to help his wife who just gave birth to a baby… burn some fat. It is a common local practice among nursing mothers here in Nigeria. I don’t really know how effective the result is. Anyway, that is not my bone of contention for writing this piece. After getting the drinks, my friend told me he saw some scary particles in the drink, shortly after his wife drank from one of the bottles. On discovering this, he quickly checked the other bottle which is still sealed and discovered that there were some noticeable particles in the bottle too. So, he called to ask for my advice since his wife had been stooling and vomiting for some days now. She is presently admitted at the hospital. We have decided to take this case up against the company. Any lawyer interested in helping us out to seek justice should please contact me as soon as possible. We have the ...
